June 2017 saw the Leeds Samba posse getting on down to some serious samba at Leeds University. Guest drummer Si Badger, an old compadre from the beyondrum years got the party started by engaging members of the public in an open workshop, and we even bagged a new bateria member. Leeds University is a great home to many, and has a very active union. The staff festival was a lovely family event with plenty of good things to do. Result!
The sun beat down on Unidos do Ritmo’s first parade as the audience got a taste of things to come. Samba Reggae and Thunderous Rio-style batucada reverberated around the campus for the first time in ages, and the Leeds Samba band took a happy bow. We need some practise walking up steps with a Surdo!
On-stage things heated up even more. As the full Unidos do Ritmo bateria show fired up the crowd, all the usual suspects got the dancing started. We were happy to see more of our regular dancers and friends melting out of the audience, into the show. An ad-hoc collaboration with Honeydrum brought lyrics and congas to the stage, and the bateria found themselves mostly confortable in unfamiliar territory…
It was a blast. Get us back next year for more samba at Leeds University!
